Este trabalho analisou mudanças ocorridas nos setores de atividade e na renda da população economicamente ativa residente na área rural em cinco regiões do Brasil, com base nos dados das PNADs de 1992 e 2002. Mostrou-se que a PEA rural e a PEA agrícola decresceram em todas as regiões e as únicas atividades que aumentaram sistematicamente sua participação no emprego total foram o emprego doméstico e o comércio. Os rendimentos da PEA cresceram cerca de 30% no período em termos reais, mas as rendas não derivadas do trabalho cresceram à frente dos rendimentos do trabalho, confirmando a importância das transferências na distribuição da renda rural.

This paper focuses on the changes in income and activity sectors of the economically active rural population over 1992-2002 from five regions of Brazil, based on the (PNAD), the national household income survey. Both the economically active rural population and the economically active agricultural population decreased in all the regions, as did the jobs in agriculture. However, the number of household servants and employees in commerce (retail) increased in all the regions. The income of the EAP increased by nearly 30% over the decade, but other sources of income increased much more than their earnings, thus confirming the importance of transfers for the rural income distribution in Brazil.
